As a woman, having control over our bodies and our health is particularly important – especially in terms of pregnancy. While there are many parts of pregnancy that you cannot control, there are two that you can – your nutrition and your fitness. With the help of your doctor, you can develop a plan to help keep both you and your baby as healthy as possible.

Nutrition during pregnancy is a funny thing. You have to contend with all the rules, such as no caffeine and no fish, while still having crazy cravings. Your doctor will present you with the ideal pregnancy diet. Its design gives both you and your baby the nutrition you need. Many women struggle with the pregnancy diet due to morning sickness or cravings. Talk to your doctor about your particular needs. Stay away from the ‘no-nos,’ and try to treat your cravings in a healthy way. For example, if you find yourself craving heavy ice cream try increasing your calcium intake with milk, yogurt, and cheese.

Fitness is equally important. Remaining active throughout a pregnancy is beneficial in several ways. First, it can help prepare your body for the stress of child-birth. Second, it can help make recovery easier. Discuss your pre-pregnancy fitness routine with your doctor and develop a modified plan that will won’t over tax you but will still give you the benefits of a fitness plan.

Pregnancy is a scary and exciting time. Remember to take care of the things that you can. Focusing some efforts on your nutrition and your fitness will help you in every stage of your pregnancy.
